They left their farms, their shops, their trade,
From city street to woodland glade.
Some rich in gold, some rich in grit,
Yet all as one in cause were knit.
A statesman’s quill, a trader’s chest,
A yeoman’s yield, a warrior’s test.
By steel and speech, by deed and word,
Their path was laid, their purpose stirred.
Beneath the winter’s icy shade,
They watched their campfire embers fade.
The belly’s ache, the rattling breath—
A razor’s edge of life and death.
The muskets spat, the iron screamed,
Where red on frozen furrows streamed.
No polished ranks, just men of mud,
Who bought their country in their blood.
At last, the foe was turned away,
Their banners fell, their ranks gave way.
The cost was high, the struggle done,
Yet through it all, the prize was won.
Their task fulfilled, their burden laid,
Now ours to guard the world they made.
Lo, here they rest, their labors through,
A roll of honor, deeds held true.
