The John Paul Jones Chapter is an active group of history buffs, patriots, and friends who enjoy honoring our Revolutionary War ancestors through service, education, and fellowship.
You’ll find us out in the community—whether it’s our Color Guard at public events, visiting schools to share history, or just gathering for a good conversation over breakfast with fellow Compatriots.
We also have members who are great at genealogy and ready to help you dig into your family tree to see if you’ve got a patriot ancestor of your own.
We’d love to connect and keep the spirit of the American Revolution alive—together.
The idea of starting a new chapter in Kitsap County took root in 2010 when WA SAR State Secretary Doug Nelson realized there were enough SAR members in Kitsap and Jefferson counties to support one. He discussed the idea with WA State President Bob Doughty, who helped nurture that seed of thought. As word spread, volunteers stepped up. The Seattle Chapter genealogist offered to serve in that same role for the new chapter, and the Alexander Hamilton Chapter eagerly agreed to sponsor the effort.
Letters were sent to all SAR members in the two counties asking if they would be interested in chartering a new chapter. The response was an overwhelming “yes”. Among those who participated were Don Weedin, Bob and June Smith, Don and Claudia Tilman, Dan Weedin, Doug Nelson, Tom Herwer, Phil Hamlin, Dennis Carnagey, and others. After discussing potential names, the group settled on the John Paul Jones Chapter. A formal request was then submitted to the WA SAR Board of Directors, which voted overwhelmingly in favor.
The charter meeting was held at the Silverdale Beach Hotel on October 30, 2010. Chapter officers were:
President – Doug Nelson
Vice President – Dan Weedin
Secretary – Eric Nelson
Treasurer – Fred Gilbert
Genealogist – John Ernest
Historian – Tom Herwer
Chaplain – Bob Smith
We were off and running. We began with twelve members and had grown to twenty-two by the time of the charter meeting.
At the meeting, Stan Wills of Spokane Chapter #1 presented the colors. Vice President Dan Weedin introduced the Kitsap Chordsmen Barbershop Harmony Society, and the celebration began. State President Bob Doughty presented the official charter. State Treasurer Tony Abbott awarded the chapter a grant check. Jan Doughty of the WA SAR Ladies Auxiliary presented the chapter with a gavel and flags. Past State President John Qualls gifted a chapter necktie and medal to Doug Nelson.
Compatriot Stan Wills then installed new members—his son Troy Wills and Jordan Reich. Vice President Weedin also introduced Gale Palmer and Stan Wills, who gave a program on Revolutionary War muskets. Miss West Sound 2011, Whitney Glebe, brought greetings to the assembly.
John Paul Jones, was one of the most celebrated naval heroes of the American Revolution. Known as the "Father of the American Navy," Jones was a fearless and skilled commander who took the fight to British waters, proving that the young American fleet could challenge the world's most powerful navy. His most famous victory came in 1779 aboard the Bonhomme Richard, when he defeated the British warship HMS Serapis, famously declaring, “I have not yet begun to fight!”
We chose his name because our chapter serves greater Kitsap County, home to several key U.S. naval bases. Jones’ legacy of courage, perseverance, and commitment to American independence reflects the naval heritage of our region and inspires us to honor and preserve the sacrifices of our patriot ancestors
